Personal Work
This photo series captures a journey that changed me. It was my first time in Latin America, and I roadtripped through Peru with my close friend Nuria, whom I met in college a year earlier.
From Lima’s lively streets to the ancient city of Cuzco, this summer marked my transition from being a teenager to becoming someone more aware of the world around me. As I witnessed the different realities of Perú, I realized how sheltered my own life was, and made me more appreciative of my luck in life.
Peruvian society is a rich tapestry of cultural diversity, blending ancient traditions with modern influences. Life varies greatly across regions: bustling urban centers like Lima contrast with tranquil Andean villages and vibrant Amazonian communities. Coastal cities thrive on commerce and gastronomy, while rural areas celebrate deep-rooted customs through festivals, music, and dance.
Despite socio-economic disparities, Peruvians embrace resilience, pride in their heritage, and an enduring connection to nature. The country’s rich heritage—rooted in Indigenous, Spanish, African, Asian, and European influences—has fostered a deep appreciation for cultural diversity.
In Perú, I carried my 1961 Rolleiflex camera, which sparked curiosity wherever I went. The people were incredibly welcoming, not only open to being photographed but also eager to engage in conversation. I was struck by their warmth, education, and courtesy.
Many who posed in front of the camera went beyond a simple exchange, inviting me into their homes and sharing glimpses of their lives. Their openness and genuine hospitality made the experience deeply enriching and unforgettable.
Peru faces significant challenges with class inequality, deeply rooted in its history and geography. Urban centers like Lima often contrast sharply with rural Andean and Amazonian regions, where access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities is limited.
Leaving Perú, I felt inspired, reinvigorated, and deeply aware of my place in the world. The journey had its ups and downs, confronting me with the country’s many realities, but its beauty and resilience left an indelible mark. I’d return in a heartbeat.
